Monocromía

Monocromía by Lisandra Cruz

Textile collage, which combines embroidered drawing and patchwork in a series of layers of fabric. A layering of transparencies. A study in textures, which includes fibers such as cotton, linen, silk, rayon, polyester and nylon.
As starting points: the love of design, the exploration of craft, friendship and collaboration. Within the process, of course, the evocation.
I cultivate great interest in Japanese screens. I was inspired by one from 1870 titled “Open Ocean,” to work on my participation in MAGISTER. With a solid background, it is a simple drawing of the print in a monochromatic palette. However, the interpretation for this piece takes a more suggestive turn in terms of the image, where the elements are not necessarily figurative and the exploration is more evident in the subtle contrast of tonal values and textures, in a textile and fiber drawing on silk.

Relation with Cristiano:

Life in general and career paths generate very specific scripts for all of us who choose to create as a profession. I met Cristiano many years ago as colleagues within the Fashion Industry in a Puerto Rico that, in the face of countless challenges, stands out for being resilient and highly creative. This is exactly a good approach to highlight in our work together as Fashion Design professors at the International School of Design at the Universidad del Turabo, now Universidad Ana G. Méndez in Puerto Rico. Also in our respective careers or professions.
I was able to witness Cristiano's innovative and restless spirit, motivating the spirit of design students in the best possible way, encouraging them to search for more, to explore silhouettes, materials and ideas, and to develop their own vocabularies as designers in training, making their way in the industry.
I witnessed his creative streak, with great attention to everything and small details, achieving a lot from little. Assertive and convincing in his ideas. The best attitude at work and in life: always.
The collaboration was a comfortable and natural process, of joy, respect and growth.
I also had the joy of having his support and support in my initiatives and projects. Faced with the challenges of my complex ideas that generally require great dedication, effort and long hours of work, Cristiano's optimistic support was inspiring and of great value. His good sense of humor: incomparable, true and contagious. I will always be moved by his empathy for me.
Connecting after enough time is truly refreshing, cause for celebration.
I do not believe that there are fashion designers and other creatives from our Industry practicing their professions in Puerto Rico during the years that Cristiano lived and worked on the Isla del Encanto, who have not had the opportunity to work, collaborate, or at least know Cristiano . His impact was notable and always appreciated. Good anecdotes abound. The results of working together usually generate healthy nostalgia and a lot of gratitude.
When you see the evolution and effort of someone with a lot of talent, great ideas, and unwavering drive, it is undeniable to want them to continue growing in their career and in their life. Being summoned and in some way being part of this project, of great significance for Cristiano, is an opportunity that I will always treasure. MONOCROMÍA evokes all those things: friendship, collaboration, craftsmanship and good design, propellant of so much.
